The Endless Drip Drip Drip

drip, drip, dripWelcome to the first official Marketing Monday post. Yeah, I’m gonna give it a shot.

It’s human nature to go for big wins. It’s good science to go for the power of small wins.

Most progress occurs incrementally, not exponentially. (Real change, on the other hand, vice versa.)

Are you looking for ways to make a big splash with your marketing? Looking to sell hundreds of copies the day you launch?

Stop looking.

While those things can happen, the huge sales and the widespread news. But you can’t force them, can’t control them.

The days of the single bestseller making an author’s reputation are over. If you want to make a career out of writing, it’s going to be a long haul. Marathon, not sprint.

Watch a marathon. Nobody, nobody comes off the line very fast. Speed over the first mile means nothing — though it is an indicator who won’t be finishing.

In Texas they talk about “farmers’ rain”, the stuff that’s not heavy, but it goes on and on and on. It has time to soak into the ground rather than the excess running off.

Drip, drip, drip.

Your marketing needs to soak in if it’s going to result in sales. And you need to be prepared to keep this up long term if you’re going to make a living at it.
