1. Tucson AZ -> Tucumcari NM
2. Tucumcari NM -> Kearny MO
3. Kearny MO -> Cameron WI
3 days with friends in Cameron, in a big old rambling farm house and a nameless puppy waiting to be given to our host’s granddaughter as a graduation gift (she named him Winston.)
4 days house-sitting at a gorgeous home buried deep in the woods with 2 friendly cats and 1 that’s a bit cranky
1 of those evenings out on the lake, seeing osprey, kingfishers, great blue herons, turtles, and a muskrat

Creative Trip Around the World

In this week’s 21st Century Creative podcast Mark McGuinness and guest Laurie Millotte discuss creating a global business. Laurie’s challenge to listeners was to create a round-the-world trip based on your creative desires. Here’s what I wrote:

Before Best Beloved and I spent a year traveling the US and Canada doing house sitting, we’d already built a location-independent business. As a result, we’ve already done a fair bit of traveling. But this week’s challenge has me thinking.

1. San Francisco. The entire city, but especially the waterfront and the trolleys, fire up my creativity. I’d want to start my trip with a total immersion in a city that has always inspired me.

Go Easy in the Boulevard

The last thing the police officer said was in English, sort of.

“You, go easy in the boulevard.”

My brother nodded vigorously.

I continued looking vaguely out the windshield at the traffic passing by.

Like many teenagers in the 70s, we sometimes took Dad to work so we could use the car.

Work just happened to be in another country.

Being on the Dangers of Badly Designed Bathrooms

It seemed unlikely we would come to terms, this shower stall and I

I looked up as the shower needled my, I suppose “lower chest” would be correct though not necessarily medically or anatomically accurate (I apologize in advance to those who know what things are called for being fairly loose in my terminology – but just this once). As I say, I looked up and noticed that the mini-blind wand (see previous apology) was inside the shower as was I.

At first it seemed as though the blinds had been installed a bit too wide at the top and cut to width around the shower. Further reflection during my aqueous impalement suggested another answer for the strange inverted L shape. It appeared that the almost human-sized glass box I was in had been installed after the window and blinds already existed.

Contrast and Brightness

One month ago at this moment our yard was silent and white. A foot of snow covered everything, including the lake. The pines had a light frosting of white and the darker bark of the elms and walnuts stood out from it all.

Nothing moved. No sound but a tractor in the distance.

Writers and Travel: Connected at the Hip?

Reconnected with a gent we knew in Sacramento, who said sure, we can get together for coffee . . . if they happen to be visiting from their new home in Panama.

Mikkel and his wife Connie moved to Pedasi, Panama last year. They wanted to live near the beach, and guess what? It’s less expensive to do that in Panama than in California.

They’ve been writing about their adventure since before they left. Isn’t it interesting that those who uproot and go to amazing places no longer just have a life? It’s always an adventure.

Maybe that’s why writers and travel are so intertwined in my mind.
